Loud booms from Tooele Army Depot detonations heard across Wasatch Front

The Tooele Army Depot announced Monday that officials will be conducting “open detonations” as part of demilitarization operations.

The detonations began shortly before 11:45 a.m. at the South Area OD Range, causing loud noises and shaking felt across Oquirrh Mountain communities and the Wasatch Front.

Several Utahns expressed concerns about the cause of the noise, with a few worried that it may be related to the Iran conflict. One online user said the shaking was felt far away from the depot, adding, “Sorry people I think we are at war.”

The Tooele Army Depot gave a four-hour heads-up about the detonations. Officials said residents can submit noise reports by calling 435-833-3300 or sending an email to usarmy.tead.jmc.list.pao@army.mil. Those who reach out should leave their name, contact information, and the time and location the noises were heard.
