Shootout at Buc-ee’s leads to police chase

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A man shot at officers and stole a car at a Gordon County Buc-ee’s on Thursday, later dying by suicide after an interstate chase, according to law enforcement.

At around 4 a.m., Calhoun police were called to the gas station at 601 Union Grove Road after someone reported a fight. They tried to put the suspect in handcuffs, but the man ran away and fired at the officers who followed him, police said. Nobody was injured in the shooting.

The suspect, who has not been identified, then carjacked a vehicle from the Buc-ee’s parking lot and sped off, police said.

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office said its dispatch team informed deputies that the suspect was possibly traveling on I-75. They spotted the vehicle on Chattanooga Road and tried to pull it over, but the driver didn’t stop, kickstarting a chase.

During the three-mile pursuit, the suspect fired at deputies from his car, according to the sheriff’s office. He crashed near mile marker 339, and deputies approached the car, finding that he had shot himself in the head and died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
