Air quality alert for WNY; Health advisory issued

An air quality alert for Western New York warns of elevated fine particulates today, urging sensitive groups to limit outdoor activities.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — An Air Quality Alert has been issued for Western New York until midnight tonight.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued the Air Quality Health Advisory for fine particulates in the air.

According to officials, the air quality levels in the outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 100 for Fine Particulates.

The AQI measures levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern is.

The New York State Department of Health recommends that people limit strenuous outdoor physical activity. They say those that may be sensitive to elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma or heart disease.

Those experiencing symptoms of respiratory issues should consult their primary care provider.
