They weren’t kidding about Oakmont Country Club. The venue that has hosted more U.S. Open tournaments than any other showed its teeth again to kick off the 125th edition of this golf major.

Sam Burns (-3) stands alone atop the 2025 U.S. Open leaderboard at 3-under on the tournament. He shot a 5-under on Friday, marking his lowest 18-hole score at the tournament in seven appearances. J.J. Spaun (-2) and Viktor Hovland (-1) round out the Top 3.

The second round of the U.S. Open was suspended Friday at 8:15 p.m. ET due to lighting in the area with a handful of golfers still on the course. The cut line is projected at 7-over, but won’t be finalized until the second round officially concludes Saturday. Play resumes at 7:30 a.m. ET.

The 156-golfer field will be cut down to the top 60 and ties before the third round begins, which is different than the top 70 and ties used as the cut line by the PGA Championship and British Open. The Masters takes the top 50 and ties.

USA TODAY Sports tracked the projected cut line throughout Friday’s second round, and kept tabs on the notable golfers who were in danger of missing the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open. Here’s how it played out:
