Guardians score, recap vs Dodgers | Cleveland rallies in the 8th to beat L.A.

CLEVELAND — The Guardians will throw a bullpen game against the Los Angeles Dodgers to cap a three-game series at Progressive Field.

Slade Cecconi was originally scheduled to take the mound, but he had his start day pushed back while dealing with a groin injury. In his place, Kolby Allard will open the game in what will effectively be a bullpen game.

Emmanuel Clase earns the save; Guardians beat the Dodgers

Emmanuel Clase worked a 1-2-3 ninth, and the Guardians beat the Dodgers 7-4 to avoid a sweep. They’re off Thursday before beginning a three-game series against the Angels.

Angel Martinez drills go-ahead, 3-run home run in eighth inning

The Guardians have put together a five-run eighth inning, and they also now have a season-high 15 hits today.

More importantly, Angel Martinez drilled a go-ahead, three-run home run just over the 19-foot wall in left field to give Cleveland a 7-4 lead.

Guardians, Dodgers score: Nolan Jones ties it in eighth inning

The Guardians have come alive and tied it in the eighth.

With lefty Tanner Scott on the mound, Jhonkensy Noel and Will Wilson each singled and Daniel Schneemann drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out.

After Austin Hedges struck out, Nolan Jones hit a single to left field to score two runs and tie it (partially helped by Andy Pages bobbling the ball in the outfield). Jones is 3-for-3 since entering the game for Kwan, his first three-hit game of the season.

Carlos Santana drives in Jose Ramirez to cut into Dodgers lead

The Guardians have finally punched back. In the bottom of the seventh, Carlos Santana lined a double down the right-field line to score Jose Ramirez, making it 4-2.

Matt Festa handled the eighth inning, leaving Jhonkensy Noel, Will Wilson and Daniel Schneemann to face Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott.

Guardians, Dodgers score update: Los Angeles continues to tack on runs

The Guardians took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but it’s been all Dodgers since that time.

In the seventh, Kike Hernandez scored from third via a Tim Herrin wild pitch to put the Dodgers up 4-1. And this Guardians lineup, especially without Kwan, is just lacking the needed punch.

Freddie Freeman extends Dodgers lead

The top of that Dodgers lineup is just absolutely brutal for opposing pitchers. The Guardians have at least limited Shohei Ohtani’s impact thus far, but there’s still Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman to deal with.

In the top of the sixth, with Betts in scoring position, Freeman lined a hard-hit single to right field, and Jhonkensy Noel’s throw home was just late, giving L.A. a 3-1 lead.

Steven Kwan exits Guardians-Dodgers game with right wrist injury

The team has announced that left fielder Steven Kwan left the game with right wrist inflammation.

Cade Smith enters game for Kolby Allard

Kolby Allard’s day is done after that fourth inning. He finished with two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts on 62 pitches.

Steven Kwan exits Guardians-Dodgers game in fourth inning

Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan has been pulled from the game in favor of Nolan Jones. The team hasn’t yet provided any details for the reason of Kwan’s departure.

Cleveland’s outfield depth could be dwindling if Kwan is exiting the game for anything serious. Lane Thomas is dealing with plantar fasciitis.

Kolby Allard vs Clayton Kershaw; Guardians lead after third inning

Kolby Allard is through the Dodgers lineup once and thus far escaped any damage (no runs, one hit), and the Guardians will enter the fourth inning leading 1-0.

Gabriel Arias had a chance to extend that advantage in the third, but he grounded into an inning-ending double play.
