Isolated severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging wind gusts

SAN ANTONIO – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for portions of our western third of the area and south down I-35 from Bexar County until 11:00PM. An upper level disturbance is approaching our region and developing scattered showers and thunderstorms. The first wave of rain has moved across Bexar County with additional chances through this evening.

Severe weather parameters of instability and shear are highest in areas with the watch but a very isolated strong to severe storm cannot be entirely dismissed in and around Bexar County through 9pm. But odds do favor areas to the west or south for warnings issued next several hours ahead.

The main hazards in the watch are large hail and damaging wind gusts. A very isolated tornado risk is on the table too for areas closer to the Rio Grande as seen in the Storm Prediction Center storm hazards forecast.

The highest rain chance in and around Bexar County will be from 5pm – 9pm. We’ll be monitoring storms out west to see if they evolve into clusters or a line and where their forward momentum builds for movement. The expectation is they’ll take a southeast turn into deep South Texas but could clip parts of Bexar County.

Total rainfall will range from .01″ – .50″+ in and around Bexar County with pockets of heavier rain possible in western third of our region. That said, there could be an isolated spot or two that sees over .50″ rain in and around Bexar County. Thus the “plus sign” referencing locally more.

All rain moves out of the area overnight with just a leftover sprinkle or shower in the area through 4am.

Friday will be a partly sunny day but with the upper low overhead, a isolated shower or weak t-storm could pop-up in our area. A 20% rain chance will be in the forecast for this scenario.
