Steve Martin wanted to clear some things up with The New York Times today, calling out the publication on social media after he spotted a major mistake about him in the crossword puzzle.
The actor took to Instagram on April 18 to share a photo of the puzzle and the clue in question, with the photo showing 65 across as saying, “Elite group whose members include Steve Martin and Geena Davis.”
The answer appeared to be MENSA, a nonprofit organization that welcomes people who score in the 98th percentile or higher on an official IQ test. Davis has reportedly been a member for decades, with Oprah Winfrey mentioning the accomplishment in a 2006 interview.
Martin wanted to make it clear that he isn’t a member of the high-profile organization, writing, “Hey NYT crossword, FYI, I’m not a member of MENSA and never have been. Just a regler guy.”
“They meant the OTHER Steve Martin,” joked a fan in the comments, as more wrote, “Too funny,” and “Sshhh. Take the compliment!”
Another fan quipped, “I’ve been told there’s a parallel organization for the rest of us, called DENSA.”
Others shared their reaction to seeing the clue in the crossword, writing, “I laughed when I saw that clue. Not that you couldn’t be a member tho,” and “I had read that clue and thought, ‘Well, sure.'”
