HONOKAA (HawaiiNewsNow) – Abandoned vehicles and strong winds helped fuel a fire in Honokaa on Hawaii Island Sunday afternoon.
The Hawaii Fire Department said the initial call came in at 11:41 a.m. for an abandoned vehicle fire at the intersection of Lehua and Mamane streets.
HFD arrived on the scene before 11:50 a.m., and crews saw that multiple vehicles were on fire. Strong winds spread the fire to large stands of bamboo, and a hill helped fuel the fire, officials said.
Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency announced a fire warning shortly after 1:30 p.m.
Hawaii County police closed Lehua Street as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.
Crews called upon a dozer to help get the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. Choppers 1 and 2 also assisted in putting out the fire.
HFD said the fire was under control at 4 p.m. and fully extinguished by 5:30 p.m.
The cause of the vehicle fire is unknown.
An estimated six acres of land were burned.
