Texas Tech transfer portal entrant owns Iowa basketball ties

Former Texas Tech guard Kevin Overton revealed his decision to enter the transfer portal on Sunday night.

Given his ties to new Iowa basketball assistant coach Luke Barnwell, the Hawkeyes could be players in Overton’s transfer portal recruitment. Barnwell coached Overton last season with the Red Raiders. The duo combined to lead Texas Tech to a 28-9 record and a trip to the Elite Eight.

Texas Tech fell to eventual national champion Florida in the Elite Eight, 84-79. Overton scored five points on 2-of-4 shooting in 13 minutes off the Red Raiders’ bench against the Gators.

A 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Overton also played for coach Barnwell at Sunrise Christian in Kansas. Overton was a three-star signee and the No. 37 combo guard nationally when he came out of Sunrise Christian. He signed with Drake. Overton averaged 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting 42.2% from the field and 33.1% from 3-point range last season with the Red Raiders. The OKC native played in 36 games and started one with Texas Tech.

Overton scored a season-high 20 points against Arizona in the Big 12 Tournament championship and 12 points in a Sweet 16 overtime win over Arkansas.

In his freshman season at Drake, Overton averaged 11.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 44% from the field, 34.6% from beyond the arc and 79.5% from the free-throw line.

247Sports ranks Overton as a four-star transfer, the nation’s No. 140 player and the No. 27 shooting guard.
